| Financial Counseling: Money 1 to 1 |
|
Money issues play a major role in the challenges facing married couples. Talking honestly about these issues can be an important step toward resolution for couples in conflict. Therapists can help, but they aren't always as comfortable discussing financial topics as they'd like to be. Money1to1* is designed to help therapists, social workers, and mediators increase their personal and professional knowledge of financial issues across a variety of topics to prepare them to support clients more effectively.
Going to therapy with your partner to a therapist who is specially trained to help couples deal with financial issues is the first important step to help you recover from money difficulties. In the Money1to1 program, I have been trained to help partners communicate practically about money, and to facilitate such communication without blaming or inducing feelings of guilt, anger, shame and am prepared to deal with whatever other feelings may come up. I will help you create a workable budget together, based on your current financial situation. Working together, both partners can learn to compromise without feeling that they are giving something up, or "giving in" to the other. As a Money1to1 trained therapist, I help you calculate your net worth, set financial goals and learn how to make decisions together - because both partners are impacted by these decisions. I will also help you explore your "money personalities" and why they are what they are - the messages you took in about money from your family when you were growing up. We will determine goals for saving and spending, setting priorities together and what your motivations for spending and saving are. You will learn what financial well-being is, and how to have it. Your tolerance for financial risk will be determined, and why it is important to understand it. We will discuss retirement plans and goals, and long-term financial planning. If there are any issues beyond the scope of financial therapy, you will be referred to a financial planner who can further help with details that a therapist is not trained for. The Money 1 to 1 program looks at basic issues as outlined above, and the communication that affects you as a couple. I am very excited about this program and it is rewarding to see couples who came in to my office arguing and disagreeing about money leave with common goals and in agreement with one another.
